Waste management is a new phenomenon that has emerged in the business world in the last 20 years. We've always managed our waste, be it residential or commercial but as with any procedure, there are established ways of doing it and there are better ways of doing it. Now, with both home and work life influenced by 'green' decisions, there are more and more environmental considerations to make as the pressure to 'save the planet' mounts up.

As a business, waste management covers a great many things and is actually more prevalent in day-to-day activities than you may think. Take a look at all of these waste issues and consider how your business deals with them:

  • General rubbish
  • Recyclate
  • Paper
  • Skips
  • Bin emptying

All of these are important elements of your waste schedule, some may be evident every day and some a few times a week or once every couple of weeks but all of them are worth investigation. Of course, a great portion of your waste management focus will be on becoming a greener company, recycling where possible and helping the environment, but there are financial benefits to such action it as well.

By having a policy that sees you recycle wherever possible, you can be seen as a conscientious company by a potential customer. Remember, individuals are under just as much pressure to be green as businesses and if they see the opportunity to get what they need while being green, they'll take it.

As well as the potential financial benefits, there are also real savings and profits to be made from efficient waste management. Quite often, businesses treat their rubbish collection schedule as an unseen element of their company that's out of sight and out of mind. But in reality, a company's waste management schedule can be bleeding money due to inefficiencies: too many collections, too many bins, not enough collections, staff morale issues, charges for recyclate mixed with rubbish, the list goes on.

The right schedule, based on your company's waste production, can make some real savings and benefits to the business as a whole. As well as saving money, you can earn money from your waste, if you produce waste items that can be reused or recycled then there are companies out there willing to buy that waste off of you, giving you a profit for no extra work.

Getting your waste management to the desired level of efficiency can take time, effort and a little education, but it can have massive rewards. Of course, if you want to outsource your waste management, you can always hire a Total Waste Management (TWM) company to come in, assess your needs and take care of everything for you. It's your choice.
